The Latin for nose is “rhino” and the Greek for molding is “plasty” and there you have it, rhinoplasty is a cosmetic treatment that reshapes the nose for either cosmetic or reconstructive purposes. The term rhinoplasty is used by the surgeon of course but on the outside world it is usually simply called a “nose job.”

Rhinoplasty is used to change the shape or size of the nose, when the procedure is completed the nose shape and size will be very pleasing and well balanced with the rest of the facial features. The angle from the nose to the upper lip can be changed and the function of the nose can be restored in the vent the individual was involved in an accident or has an abnormality in the nasal cavity. When the procedure is finished the person will be able to breathe comfortably through both nostrils. Both sexes are candidates for rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills but surgeons will caution any underage patients to wait until they have reached full maturity.

There are two techniques that a surgeon will use when performing rhinoplasty; open technique and the closed technique. In both cases incisions are made inside the nostrils but when the open technique is used, the fleshy skin between the nostrils is also cut. The skin is separated and any adjustments that have to be made to bone and cartilage are done. It may be necessary for the surgeon to trim some cartilage at this stage. Once the adjustments have been made the nasal passages are stuffed with cotton and an external splint is affixed. The stuffing is removed within 24 hours but the splint stays in place for about a week. The actual operation rarely exceeds two hours and is done under local or general anesthesia.

The patient can look forward to post-op bruising around the eyes and nose, this is normal and peaks three or four days after surgery, the bruising will disappear after 2 to 3 weeks. Another temporary side effect might be a dull, throbbing headache, the patient may also experience an aching nose and the area around the nose may feel numb for a few days. If the doctor has to break any bones during the surgery the recovery time will be longer of course.

People who have rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills find that they can return to work after a couple of weeks; this gives the swelling and bruising time to dissipate. Although it’s Ok to return to work, sports activities should be avoided for another couple of months.
