So, you’ve decided that you want to travel, but that you also need to earn money to finance your venture, and you’ve hit upon teaching English in Korea as the way to accomplish both these aims. It’s a great idea, and there are definitely positions available for those candidates who meet the criteria. So, what are the requirements for teaching English in Korea?

Citizenship
All applicants must be citizens of one of the following countries: the U.S., Australia, Canada, Great Britain, South Africa, Ireland or New Zealand. Your BA degree must also be from an accredited university in one of the countries.

Qualifications
In order to be granted a working visa for teaching English in Korea, requirements state that you MUST have a Bachelor’s degree. Some schools state that they do not require a degree, and that they will accept a teaching or TEFL certificate. However, without a degree you will NOT be given a visa to teach English. No English language teaching certificates, or any other non-degree post-secondary qualification will be accepted. In addition to a BA degree, many schools will also request a 120-hour TEFL certificate.

Visa Requirements
Even if you have been offered and accepted a job teaching English in Korea, requirements are that you have to have been granted an E-2 visa before any agreements become valid and binding. To do this, you have to submit a number of documents for approval. This can be a time consuming process and should be started as quickly as possible. The documents you will need are:

* Apostilled and notarized copy of Bachelor’s Degree: An apostilled copy is simply one that is accompanied by a certificate verifying and confirming the seal and signature of person who authenticated the document.
* Apostilled and notarized Criminal Background Report: This must also included a Sex Offender Registry check.
* Two copies of the original contract, signed by the applicant: All visas are issued for 12 months from the day you arrive in Korea, regardless of the date on your contract.
* A completed and signed E-2 Applicant Medical Statement
* A full resume, with correct mailing address and contact number
* A color scan of the information page of your passport
* Four recent color passport photos
