For any event or gathering, having the table linens that are correctly sized for the tables is an important consideration. Tablecloths that are too long pose safety risks and those that are too short can make a lovely table setting look out of balance.

When sizing for rectangular tablecloths is a concern, there are some important factors to consider. There will be two different lengths that are important, the length and the width. It will also be essential to calculate the measurement equally for both, or there will be a longer drop on the ends or the sides.

Measuring the Table

The best way to measure for rectangular tablecloths is to measure the surface of the table from edge to edge lengthwise and with regards to the width. This is the actual table surface that the cloth will need to cover.

Then, consider the drop or the distance the edges of the tablecloth are to hang over the table on the sides and the ends. If for some reason, you wanted the tablecloth longer on the sides than the ends or vice versa, this could be calculated for the measurement.

In most cases, rectangular tablecloths come in standard sizes. If you are using a standard 6-foot long rectangular table, you will use a tablecloth that is 132 inches long and 90 inches wide. This will provide a drop to the tablecloth so the edges just each the surface of the floor.

Options to Consider

For a unique look at a long rectangular table, you have some options to consider to add some style. Using the rectangular tablecloth as a base, you can place two smaller rectangles over the table in a diamond pattern. Additionally, a table runner can be used down the length to add a splash of color and design.
