There are many different types of welded threaded studs. Some of the options in these weld studs are more commonly used than others while some are typically used for specialty applications.

Knowing what you need the welded threaded studs for will be the first step in determining which option will be best for any specific job or project. These studs, as a group, come in a wide variety of sizes, diameters, and specific designs. Full Thread

The full welded threaded studs, often simply called full thread, are the most common type of weld stud used. These have the threads extending from the bottom to the top. The advantage with this style is that the two pieces, the base and the piece to be attached, can be tightened down the full length of the weld stud.

Pitch Diameter

The design of the pitch diameter weld stud makes it easy to spot. It has a smooth area and then the threads, with the base just slightly wider in diameter. This is the type of stud weld most commonly selected when shear force is a consideration with the project.

The obvious issue with the pitch diameter weld stud is the smooth area. This is a part of the weld stud that will need to be fully covered by the piece being attached. If this is not covered it is not possible to snug down the bolt. Any deviations in thickness or surface level could potentially create this issue.

No Thread

There is also the option to use a no thread or unthreaded weld stud. This is used more for decorative or functional types of purposes. For example, they can be used as handles or stops and even as locators, which makes them ideal for fabrication.
