Whether you have just moved into a temporary home or are planning to move shortly, moving and storage services are incredibly valuable and important.
If you’re moving into a small home temporarily, perhaps you’re waiting for a home you’re purchasing to become available, you’re going to need a place to store some of your belongings until you can place them permanently.

You might need someone to help you move all of these things once your home is ready.

The tips below will make this easier and help you to save money on the moving and storage in Alexandria VA.

Materials You Cannot Store

There are some materials that you cannot or should not place in a temporary storage unit. Because of safety hazards posed to your belongings, you cannot store items like liquid or compressed gasoline, propane, motor oil, fertilizers, or paint.

Many of these items are highly flammable. If something were to catch fire, all of your belongings would certainly be destroyed. This would also pose a threat to the safety of the items in neighboring storage containers.

Protect Your Belongings

Storage units are not cared for the same way that a house, apartment, or office building is. They aren’t meant to be lived in, after all. That means that things can get dusty. Be sure that all of your belongings either are in boxes, containers, or are at least covered to make sure that they stay nice and clean.

You might even want to lay down cardboard or a protective sheet underneath your items as well.

Plan Ahead

When it’s time to load things on the moving truck, whether you’re doing it yourself or are having a professional assist you, be sure that the items you’re most likely to need are packed into the truck first. This way, they’ll go into the storage unit last, making it much easier for you to gain access to those items should you need them at some point.

In many cases, storage units are accessed fairly frequently. Items you might not think you’ll need might be very important for you to access in just a couple of weeks. You don’t want to have to spend an entire day digging through your storage unit to get those items.

During the moving and storage, be sure to label all of your boxes comprehensively. This will make it much easier to find those important items should you need them before you’re ready to move everything out of the unit.

Use a Dolly

If you plan to move anything yourself, be sure to rent a dolly if you don’t own one. A dolly will make moving boxes much easier, and help you to protect your back, which is commonly hurt when moving heavy items.
