Many commercial applications today call for either round aluminum tubing or pipe. On the surface, both materials may look the same. For example, they are both made from a similar process called extrusion and may also contain the same type of alloy. So what’s the difference between a tube and a pipe? Let’s check out both to help you determine which is best for your needs.

What is Pipe?

Pipe is round material which is hollow inside. It is often used for carrying liquids or gases from one area to another. For example, this is what you see in most water and natural gas systems. The main difference between tube and pipe is the way measurements are taken. Pipe is always measured by its internal diameter. For example, 1/2 inch galvanized iron pipe is about 1/2 inch internal diameter. The measurements are not expected to be exact. The outside diameter is created in standard sizes so threaded pipe fittings are standard and exact from one pipe to the next. In other words, with pipe, it is the outside diameter which is the most important feature but measurements are used to describe the approximate inside diameter.

What is Tubing?

Tubing is usually used for support or structural issues. For example, it is often used as framing or to protect wiring (in the form of conduit). Tube fittings are not always designed to be airtight or watertight, because this feature is sometimes not required. When you shop for tubing you always go by the outside diameter and the thickness of the wall. Many kinds of tube including round aluminum tubing calls for an exact tolerance in size and this is why tubing is usually more expensive than pipe.

What about Shapes?

If you check online you can find tube in round, square and rectangular shapes. In fact, square tube makes excellent framing and you can build many things with it. On the other hand, pipe is almost always round in shape. In fact, most square pipe you see is actually tubing, because some people often confuse the two terms.

Should I Buy Round Aluminum Tubing or Pipe?

The most important thing to remember about tube and pipe is their uses. For example, if you need something to carry water, oil or gases, you’ll want to buy pipe. However, pipe is not as sturdy as tube and it usually needs some kind of support system.

Tubing is used for framing, sign posts and anywhere there is a need for structural support. If you still have doubts, you should check with your metal extrusion professionals. They can help you choose the best materials for the job and they will provide dependable service.
